Starter motor
- An engine starting motor with an electrical unit that produces torque and a mechanical unit that transmits it.
- Amplifies small rotational force for the engine and protects the starter with an overrunning clutch.
Armature
- Acts as the armature wrapping the starter motor brushes and coils.
- Consists of shaft, coil, and commutator; rotates through magnetic interaction.
Solenoid switch
- Engages the pinion with the flywheel ring gear and also works as a relay for motor current.
Yoke / Field coil
- The yoke is the starter body and a path for magnetic flux.
- Field coils on the iron core become an electromagnet when current flows.
Overrunning clutch (ORC)
- Power transmission between the armature shaft and pinion.
- Disengages when pinion speed exceeds armature speed to protect the starter.
